Contractor of Maha Metro dug up two pits that are filled with huge amount of ground water

On one hand where Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is taking action against illegal chilled water jar packaging units/plants in the city for extracting ground water without permission from Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) while on other hand the contractor of Maha Metro who is constructing a seven-storeyed parking plaza on the backside of viewers gallery is extracting ground water by digging pit without any restriction.

Earlier, The Hitavada reported that environmentalists of the city raising objection over illegal extraction of ground water from the opposite side of Futala Lake which is causing water level fluctuation by couple of feet in the lake. Many experts and environmentalists raised concern over the water fluctuation of the lake and pointed the blame over ground water extraction at huge quantity in the vicinity of the water body. When The Hitavada approached the workers who are working at the spot for construction of the parking plaza, they said that they dug up the pit for construction work, but, the pits are brimming with water. They also cleared that they are not using the water for construction work, but The Hitavada found that the water is pumping out from the pits and transporting through pipes to construction site. “Extracting ground water near the lake is a matter of concern.

The contractor is denying the use of water but they are extracting the water without any permission which is illegal. Civic body must take action against such activity,” said Anasuya Kale Chhabrani to The Hitavada. If we take the example of Sakkardara Lake which is on the verge of extinction, the city fathers and citizens are directly responsible for it. Now, the water level of Futala Lake is also started decreasing due to some reason which is a matter of research. Environmentalists and experts are concerned about the water depletion in the lake but the civic administration is not taking step to find out the reason behind it. When, the civic body taking action against chilled water bottle units for illegal extraction of ground water, then they must take action against the contractor and the Maha Metro who are openly extracting ground water which is directly affecting the water body of the city.
