Moudhapara police on Tuesday claimed to have arrested the jail guard who allegedly thrashed on-duty doctors of Dr B R Ambedkar Memorial Hospital Raipur under inebriated condition. “Infuriated by the delay in MRI scanning of a prisoner, jail guard of Dantewada District Jail Shatrughan Uraon allegedly abused and thrashed on-duty doctors of Dr B R Ambedkar Memorial Hospital. Police have arrested the accused jail guard and are probing the matter further,” said a senior police officer.

Probe is underway to find out the role of two police personnel, posted at the police outpost in the hospital, who were allegedly found mute spectators during the incident and the steps taken by them to prevent it, added the officer. The officer further informed that the investigation and medical report of the accused jail guard revealed that he was in an inebriated condition at the time of incident. It may be recalled that the Jail Guard along with a prisoner had come to the hospital to get a medical examination of an ill prisoner on February 22.

Aggrieved by the delay in medical examination, the jail guard allegedly started abusing the on-duty doctors and thrashed them when objection was raised against his behaviour. In this connection, Moudhapara police have registered an offence against the jail guard under Sections 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 294 (obscene acts and songs), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and other laws. Further probe in the case is underway.
