MAHARASHTRA Director General of Police Hemant Nagrale on Thursday said that police officers should avoid discussing on-going investigations in criminal cases as it may spoil the quality of evidence. “Divulging the facts ascertained during the probe to media tends to create misconception among the people,” he added. Interacting with mediapersons, Nagrale said that sharing findings in the probe mostly in sensitive cases often resulted in speculations and assumptions as such matters were decided by the court.

The State Police Chief, who is on a two-day tour to review the overall crime scenario in the city and Nagpur Range, informed that the process of providing job on compassionate grounds to next of kin of the police personnel who died in the line of duty was underway. “One of the family members of police personnel who died while discharging their duties to prevent spread of coronavirus would be provided a job,” he added. Total 339 police personnel fell to COVID-19 in the State. Asked about 20,000 vacancies in Maharashtra Police, the top cop said that recruitment for 7000 vacancies that was due from 2019 would start shortly. Similarly, he said, the issue of filling up 8000 vacancies last year would be resolved at the earliest. Nagrale said that he was personally monitoring the law and order situation in Nagpur and it is fully under control.

Due to sudden spurt in bodily offences, he said that he directed the Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar to initiate preventive action against the anti-socials. Nagpur City Police had already started detaining hardened criminals under MPDA, he added. City Police Commissioner Kumar had already prepared a blue print and cracked a whip against the anti-socials, he added. On the topic of corruption, Nagrale said that corruption was a part of the system and often revolved around the government departments. “Police, through their Anti-Corruption Bureau, strive hard to prevent corruption by putting behind bars the corrupt public servants in Revenue, Police and other State Government departments and prosecute them,” he added. Nagrale pointed out that constant supervision by superior officers can only keep a check on public servants indulging in corrupt practices.
