To stem the spread of COVID-19, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has directed closure of all shops and offices in the city over the weekend. In view of rising cases, the administration found it necessary to break the chain and hence the first step is to prevent crowding that was rampant in markets. By observing closure for two days there would be lesser number of people outside and ensure slowing down the transmission of virus. So all Government and private offices, barring those in essential services, would remain closed on Saturday and Sunday.

Mayor Dayashankar Tiwari and Municipal Commissioner Radhakrishnan B have appealed that all establishments, offices and shops should remain closed. In effect, citizens should stay at home and avoid stepping out if there is no urgency. The restrictions are necessary in larger interest of citizens health.

Using the social media handles of NMC, both have appealed citizens to abide by the rules and co-operate in complying with the restrictions imposed by the administration to break the chain of corona. Mayor said even if one person is infected and if they move around in crowded places they have potential to infect 25 persons atleast. Therefore from point of view protecting citizen’s health it is imperative each one observe the rules and co-operates with civic machinery. At public places, citizens should stick to use of masks, sanitizers and maintaining social distance. Though markets and offices would remain closed, there is no ban on essential services like distribution of milk, selling of vegetables, or for that matter for even morning walkers there are no restrictions.

Municipal Commissioner said that NMC is taking strict steps to control in view of rising number of corona patients in city. Teams of Nuisance Detection Squad (NDS) is taking action against the violators day and night. However action is not the answer and voluntary following the norms is more necessary to prevent infection.

Except essential services, all shops in markets and also stand alone category, malls, markets, theatres, restaurants, hotels, Government, Semi-Government, private offices, abattoirs, meat shops will remain closed.
