Famous play ‘Kabuliwala’ directed by Reena Sinha was staged as a part of 12-day Veerangana Theatre Festival. The play is based on story of a writer with a five-year-old daughter, Mini. Mini forms an unlikely friendship with a tall Afghani fruit seller, shawls and other things from his native land in the streets of Calcutta. The story is tender, a friendship based on Afghan’s love for his own little daughter whom he leaves behind in Kabul and novelist’s little daughter to whom he gives love he feels for his own child.

The ending leaves audience teary-eyed every time it is performed on stage. There are almost no changes from the original story except for addition of a few dialogues between the father, mother and Mini. These are done because the original story is written in the first person. The 12-day Veerangana Theatre Festival started on March 8 on the occasion of International Women’s Day.
