The well-known Cardiologist Dr Pradeep Deshmukh at Super Specialty Hospital (SSH) has performed a rare procedure to treat the congenital problem of a 44-year old woman. A 44-year old woman, was admitted in emergency in Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) with severe chest pain and breathlessness. On examination, it was found that she was in state of heart failure and extremely sick.

The further investigations revealed she was diagnosed to have congenital defect in root of aorta, largest blood pipe in body. It was ruptured in right sided heart chamber causing massive shunting of blood. This is called RSOV (Ruptured Sinus of Valsalva (RSOV) is a rarely seen disease condition. RSOV can have varied presentations from being asymptomatic with just a cardiac murmur to profound hypotension (Hypotension is low blood pressure. Your blood pushes against your arteries with each heartbeat).

There has been simultaneous occurrence of RSOV with Infective Endocarditis (IE) in literature) in RVOT (The right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) is an infundibular extension of the ventricular cavity that connects to the pulmonary artery) in technical terms, a very rare disease. After some stabilisation in GMCH, the woman was referred to Cardiac Surgery Department and then to cardiology. Since she was in state of heart failure, the sick open heart surgery was a very risky preposition. Dr P P Deshmukh, Head, Department and Associate Professor in Cardiology at Super-speciality hospital was of the opinion that the case could be managed by catheter closure as the risk was far less than surgery. The case was discussed with relatives and they gave nod to go ahead as this was life saving.

Dr P P Deshmukh, Dr Atulsing Rajput, Dr Mohit Sing took special troubles to sanction money from MJPJY as the name of disease is not mentioned in list of diseases as this is a rare disease. The ADO-1 device which is like a button and used for closing another heart ailment called patent ductus arteriosus was considered for use. The procedure of device closure was successfully performed by Dr P P Deshmukh, assisted by Dr Atulsing Rajput, Dr Mohit Sing. The procedure warranted great deal of planning, precision and skill as there is no scope of imperfection. The patient was recovered fully after discharge.
