Most teachers in various departments in Super Speciality Hospital (SSH) are working on adhoc promotions. These medical teachers do not have any objection working on ad-hoc promotions as they have an attachment to this institute. They are more worried about the institute’s prospect as most departments are deprived of Super Speciality Post Graduate (PG) seats. The Super Speciality Hospital came into being in 1997 and then the stalwart medico like late Dr B S Choubey had a dream to bring this institute at the level of Post Graduate Institute, Chandigarh. Super Speciality was expected to conduct operations, various difficult procedures, transplants, angioplasty.

The departments Super has include Cardiology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Cardio Vascular Thorasic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Urology and recently added Endocrinology and Neurology. Except the last two departments all others are working fully. In last 25 years, only Gastroenterology and Cardiology could get the PG Superspecialy seats. In 2019 the institute had tried to get the PG seats to other departments too. Medical Council of India (MCI) team had visited the institute but it refused to give approval to the request made by the institute for PG seats citing the reason that the departments did not have teachers with regular promotions. MCI team had clearly said no to the teachers working on adhoc promotions. According to MCI the teachers working on adhoc promotions or on contract basis can’t be considered as full-timers. They don’t fulfill the criterion fixed by the apex body.

This is hampering the prospects of this prestigious institute. Because of lack of PG seats, the institute is facing problems as some people join the departments, work for sometime and then leave the institute to join the other institutes having better prospects. In fact department like Urology is constantly performing in a well manner as it has performed over 100 kidney transplants. On several occasions the teachers here had appealed all the authorities to conduct the process of regular promotion but no step was taken. In fact some senior professors are planning to apply under Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) as they are fed up of not having PG activity in the institute. If exodus of senior doctors continue to take place, this good institute would face the problems.

Director assures to resolve issue Director of Medical Education of Maharashtra Dr Tatyarao Lahane while talking to ‘The Hitavada’ said, “I would personally look into the issue and we would try to remove the deficit to pave way for the regular promotions of teachers. We will take all care so that this institute would have more number of PG superspecialty seats. It would be good for everybody.”
