3 dead, several injured as fire breaks out at hospital in Wadi

Fire broke out at a private hospital along Amravati Road in Wadi area on Friday night. The fire that started from air-conditioning unit in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on the second floor, led to death of three patients on ventilator. Several other patients were injured and were rushed in ambulances to different hospitals in city.
As per the details available with Fire and Emergency Services Department of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), the fire broke out at Well Treat Hospital in Pooja Chambers in Wadi at 8.10 pm. The fire reportedly started from air-conditioning unit of ICU on second floor. Three fire tenders from NMC, one fire tender each from Wadi Fire Station and MIDC, and one turntable ladder responded to the call at the non-COVID hospital.
Around 18-20 staff members of the hospital were present during the incident. The hospital staff tried to put out the fire with the help of fire extinguisher but could not succeed. There were total 10 patients on the second floor. The fire was confined to second floor. It led to increase in temperature and also caused smoke. Six patients came out on their own and four patients were resucued by fire-fighters.
The injured and rescued patients were rushed to various hospitals including Government Medical College and Hospial (GMCH).

Dr Avinash Gawande, Medical Superintendent, GMCH, told mediapersons that three dead bodies were brought to GMCH. According to Pradip Suryawanshi, Police Inspector, Wadi Police Station, the three deceased were identified as Ranjana Madhukar Kadu (44), a resident of Dhapewada, Kalmeshwar tehsil; Tulshiram Pardhi (47), a resident of Plot No 158, Gorewada Road, Nagpur; and Prakash Bonde (69), a resident of Manish Nagar, Nagpur. Another patient rescued from the hospital fire was Ramesh Brahmankar, a resident of Mouda. One more patient, who was admitted to the ICU, had died even before the fire broke out. The third floor of the Well Treat Hospital has 17 beds. All were occupied. Fire-fighters evacuated all the patients to safety, with the help of policemen and hospital staff. The fourth floor of the hospital has a recovery room. It had five patients and one staff member. They, too, were evacuated safely.
When the fire-fighters reached the spot, a crowd had gathered outside the building as well as on the other side of the road. The sirens of ambulances and fire tenders led to passersby stopping to see what was happening. The patients were evacuated from the hospital building. As the light outside was insufficient, many people switched on the torch of their mobile phone handsets.
Amitesh Kumar, Commissioner of Police, and other senior officers rushed to the spot. Amitesh Kumar told mediapersons that some 27 patients were evacuated and shifted to other hospitals.
Rohit Shelare, Fire Officer of Wadi Municipal Council, along with his team were the first to reach the spot. Rajendra Uchake, Chief Fire Officer, NMC; Tushar Barahate, Station Officer; Fireman Sharad Dandekar, Rupesh Manke, Shalik Kothe, Shembekar, driver Sunil Dongre participated in the fire-fighting and rescue operation. The fire-fighting and rescue operation was over by 9.30 pm.
 
 
PM saddened by the incident
Narendra Modi, Prime Minister, also took note of the incident. “Saddened by the hospital fire in Nagpur. My thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives. Praying that the injured recover at the earliest,” he tweeted.
Devendra Fadnavis, Leader of Opposition in Legislative Assembly, also took note of the blaze at the hospital. The former Chief Minister asked Sameer Meghe, Hingna MLA, to extend all possible help to the patients and the injured shifted to various hospitals. He also contacted the District Collector and gave necessary instructions.
Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, also tweeted that the incident that claimed three lives was unfortunate, and extended condolences to the aggrieved families.
 
 
 
Enquiry as per procedure: Dr Raut
 
Dr Nitin Raut, Guardian Minister of district, visited the Well Treat Hospital as well as GMCH, Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital where the patients rescued were shifted. After getting information from the officers, he ordered probe. “As per the process, in such cases, an enquiry is conducted by a committee headed by Civil Surgeon. Once the enquiry is completed, based on the findings, preliminary offence is registered,” Dr Raut told ‘The Hitavada’. He had just landed at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport on Friday night when he came to know about the incident. From the airport itself, he rushed to the hospital in Wadi. Ravindra Thakare, District Collector; and Nurool Hasan, Deputy Commissioner of Police, also accompanied Dr Raut. Sunil Kedar, Animal Husbandry Minister, visited the spot.
