COVID-19 threat intensifies as 60 persons die due to virus in Nagpur district

Situation in Nagpur district constantly remains worrisome as far as status of coronavirus pandemic is concerned. In the district, the number of deaths due to COVID-19 is rising, while there is a mismatch in the number of new positive cases and recoveries. For citizens the threat intensifies as number of active cases in one single day is swelling resulting in increasing the bed occupancy in hospitals. On Thursday, the district witnessed 60 deaths due to COVID-19 in one single day, including four residents of places from outside Nagpur district.
 
The data released by the government is creating confusion among citizens. Actually, all 60 new deaths were not on Thursday alone. The death count is generally of 24 hours which means, the death count starts from the previous day and that number is included in the day’s count. Nagpur rural reported 21 deaths while 35 persons died due to coronavirus in city. With these the cumulative death count reached 5,158. According to Dr Shubhangi Deshmane, noted Gynaecologist, awareness about COVID-19 rules is becoming visible among people. She feels, even a common knowledge and its application by people would make all the difference. Several people had a fear that Government might impose strict lockdown, but they got major respite when the authority has continued with night curfew only.
 
The district has registered 3,630 new COVID 19 cases of which 1,145 are from Nagpur rural while 2,481 came positive for this dreaded virus in city taking the cumulative cases to 2,29,668. Of the single day account of new cases, four are from outside Nagpur district. Number of persons becoming corona-free has gone up by 1,000. Today 2,928 are recovered from corona and taken the cumulative total to 1,84,537. Recovery rate today has improved just by 0.01%. On Wednesday the rate was 80.34% while today it rose to 80.35%. The active cases have continued to rise. Today they stood at 39,973. The testing count in district on Wednesday increased almost by 2,000 to 17,878. Number of testing in Nagpur rural reported were 6,214 while city has registered 11,664 testing.
 
This has taken the cumulative testing count to 16,42,155. The samples examined through RT PCR were 13,930 while 3,948 were through Rapid Antigen Test. Apart from the samples of Nagpur district, the people from Nagpur and out of city approached various laboratories in Nagpur to get themselves examined. The samples came for examination at various laboratories in Nagpur include virology laboratory of Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH) (2,097), Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) (790), molecular diagnostic laboratory of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) (2,049), National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) (288), Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) (869) private laboratories (7,837), Antigen (3,948).
