Governor, CM, Speaker, former CM and other leaders express grief over demise of Congress leader Shukla
 
 
Senior Congress leader and Chairperson of Chhattisgarh Social Welfare Board Karuna Shukla, who was the niece of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, died due to coronavirus infection, at a private hospital in State capital in the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. She was 70. She is survived by her husband Madhav Shukla, one son and one daughter. Director of Ramkrishna Care Hospital Raipur Dr Sandeep Dave told The Hitavada that Karuna Shukla was tested positive and was hospitalised in the hospital 15 days ago. She breathed her last at around 12.30 am in the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday, he added. Her last rites were performed by following corona protocols at Mokshadham near Khorsi Nala in Balodabazar on Tuesday.
 
Chhattisgarh Governor Anusuiya Uikey, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, Speaker of Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly Dr Charan Das Mahant, former Chief Minister and BJP National Vice-President Dr Raman Singh, Health Minister T S Singhdeo, Home Minister Tamradhwaj Sahu, Cabinet Ministers Mohammad Akbar, Ravindra Choubey, Dr Shiv Kumar Dahariya, Guru Rudra Kumar, Anila Bhendiya, Umesh Patel, Dr Premsai Singh Tekam, MPs and MLAs have expressed grief over the demise of Congress leader Shukla. In her message, Governor Uikey said, “I am shocked to hear the death of former MP Karuna Shukla. May God give peace to the departed soul and give strength to the bereaved family to bear this loss.” In his message, Chief Minister Baghel tweeted, “I had a very close relation with Karuna Shukla and always had her blessings. May her soul rest in peace and God give us strength to bear this loss.” In his message, Dr Mahant said that Karuna Shukla had practiced the politics of values. She had always raised the problems of her region and state in the Parliament loudly and she had always made her efforts to address the grievances of the common people. I pray to God to give strength to her bereaved family to bear this loss.” In his message, former Chief Minister Dr Singh said, “I received a sad news of the sudden demise of former MP Karuna Shukla Ji. She was the niece of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ji and had been doing public service for several decades. Let Maa Bamleshwari place her at her feet and provide solace to her bereaved family. Om Shanti.”
 
The leaders cutting across the party line including Chhattisgarh Congress In-charge P L Punia, Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee President Mohan Markam, BJP State President Vishnu Deo Sai, Congress leaders Ramgopal Agrawal, Girish Dewangan, Shailesh Nitin Trivedi, Chandrashekhar Shukla, Ravi Ghosh, BJP leaders Daggubati Purandareswari, Brijmohan Agrawal and Ajay Chandrakar have also condoled the demise of Karuna Shukla. Karuna Shukla was born on August 1 in 1950 at Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. Karuna Shukla, after having served the BJP for 32 years in different capacities, had resigned from the BJP on October 25 in 2013 before the Chhattisgarh legislative assembly election citing that the BJP was “allegedly under the grip of power politics”. She joined Indian National Congress on February 27 in 2014 and contested Lok Sabha election-2014 from Bilaspur Lok Sabha constituency on a Congress ticket. She was defeated by BJP’s Lakhan Lal Sahu by a margin of 176,436 votes in the election. Karuna Shukla had contested Chhattisgarh legislative assembly election-2018 from Rajnandgaon assembly segment on Congress ticket against the then sitting Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Dr Raman Singh. She lost the assembly election to Dr Raman Singh. Shukla became MLA from BJP first time in 1993.
 
Karuna Shukla was two times of Lok Sabha Member. She represented Janjgir Lok Sabha constituency and was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) political party till 2013. She was one of the national Vice-presidents of the BJP as well as the former National President of the BJP Mahila Morcha besides holding other posts in the BJP in past. She was associated with the BJP from 1982 to 2013. She lost the Lok Sabha election-2009 from Korba to Congress candidate Dr Charan Das Mahant. In her statement, former MP Shukla had said, “I had devoted my young age to serve the BJP but I will devote my old-age to the Congress party.”
