With no solution in site to regularise medical teachers working in Government Medical Colleges across State, Maharashtra State Medical Teachers Association (MSMTA) has decided to go on mass leave from Thursday. They are likely to go on intense strike from May 3, if Government fails to resolve issue of contractual medical teachers. In a letter addressed to Director of Medical Education and Research pointed out, “We all the contractual teachers have been constantly requesting Government to merge us.

We met Minister on several occasions but no decision was taken in that regard. In November 2020, we had observed four-day mass leave agitation. But Minister had assured us to come up with the solution so we withdrew the stir.” In mid-April during video conferencing MSMTA officer-bearers Dr Sameer Golawar, and Dr Sachin Mulkutkar had put the demand of the merging. Amit Deshmukh assured them that Government would take a positive decision on this issue within next 8 to 10 days. But nothing has taken place.

We have developed a feeling that our issue is being neglected. Now we have made up our mind to go ahead with the mass leave agitation, says the MSMTA letter. “With the insurance to be offered to corona warriors has been stopped, we have been deprived of any financial assistance. In this corona pandemic, 180 contractual medical teachers are affected and their families too suffered due to corona.

On one hand Maharashtra Government doesn’t have expert doctors. Against this backdrop, Government should regularise us and encourage us to work more. Unfortunately Government is no mood to boost our morale. Government’s inaction compeled us to go for agitation,” the letter has made it clear.
