With 68.64% stock in reservoirs, no water scarcity in distt this summer

Nagpur city and district, are likely to sail through this summer without facing shortage of drinking water as storage levels in reservoirs are good enough to cater to the water demands of the citizens at least this summer. There are five major dams in the district which have 68.64% water storage so far which is little lesser than previous year. The total capacity of all these five dams is 1449.99 million cubic meters (Mcum) and on April 7 the available water storage is 995.29 Mcum, reveal statistics of Water Resources Department (WRD). In 2020, the total water storage in five dams on this date was 73.02% which was the highest in last five years.
 
Whereas in 2019, 2018 and 2017 the water stock was below 20% mark on this date. Nagpur district experienced sever water crisis from 2017 to 2019 due to below normal monsoon. As a result, on April 7, 2019, the water stock in all dams of Nagpur district were left just 9.03% which became a nightmare for the administration and also for the people. In 2019 summer, entire Wadi area, Ordnance Factory Ambajhari and localities of Ambazari etc faced hardships after the Vena dam went dry. But, good monsoon in 2020 reduced the hardship of citizens of the region. The 384 minor, medium and major dams across the Nagpur division that have a capacity to hold 4,607.01 Mcum of water, have an average live water stock of 2,469.52 mcum which is 49%.
 
Totladoh and Kamthi Khairy reservoirs are the major source of water for Nagpur city and district. On April 7, Totladoh have 769.19 Mcum total live water storage which is 75.64%. Similarly, Kamthi Khairy have 141.98 Mcum water stock which is 100% of its capacity. Last year, Totladoh had 85.80% of water stock which was almost 10% more than this year on this date. However, Kamthi Khairy had just 50.46% of water stock last year. Agriculture department officials believe the unseasonal rain, coupled with a longer winter, helped to retain higher water level in dams last year and this year too.
