IT WAS three years ago when Dr Mrunalini Fadnavis took charge of Vice-Chancellor of Punyashlok Ahilyabai Holkar Solapur University. During the same time she had decided to introduce several new things in university. She had promised that she would start a TV studio in Department of Mass Communication. She was also instrumental in starting Economics laboratory at the varsity. One more feather was added to the cap of university when Dr Fadnavis initiated archaeological museum. Dr Fadnavis hails from Nagpur and is known for her innovative thinking. Dr Fadnavis said, “Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology, School of Social Sciences established ‘Archaeological Museum’ in 2012 in the School of Social Sciences.

The antiquities are collected from various excavations conducted by department. The Museum has various artefacts from Prehistoric to Historic Period. We have displayed photographs of some important monuments, sculptures and artefacts from different places and of different periods. In 2020 Rashtriya Uchchstar Shiksha Abhiyaan (RUSA) had funded for upgradation of the Museum.” Dr Fadnavis along with Pro-ViceChancellor Dr Debendranath Mishra, Director, School of Social Sciences, Prof Goutam Kamble guided the team of Archaeology Department for developing the museum. Another project that has been initiated by Dr Fadnavis is of Economic Lab. Explaining the concept Dr Fadnavis told ‘The Hitavada’, “Generally Economics is a subject which is considered tough and hard to understand for students.

Therefore, only few interested students pursue their degree and master degrees in Economics. But economics is not that much tough and hard which is presented. Economics is just a study about how humans make decisions when facing scarcity. These can be individual decisions, family decisions, business decisions or societal decisions. Scarcity means that human wants for goods, services and resources exceed what is available. Resources, such as labour, tools, land, and raw materials are necessary to produce the goods and services we want but they exist in limited supply.” “Economic lab is meant to representation of basic and important economic theories through the diagram. The basic theories that have been selected from Micro economics and Macro economics.

The 44 economic theories have been selected and their diagrams are carved and kept for the exhibition. Each diagram is explained in a simplistic way. By reading this any layman can understand what the diagram is and what information it is carrying. The theory which are selected ranges from demand theories to welfare theory from micro economics and general theory to IS and LM theory from macro economics,” said Dr Fadnavis. The objective behind establishment of economic lab is to exhibit basic and important economic theory through the diagram in a simplistic way which can be understand by the student from any stream and by any laymen. Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Solapur University is the first university to have taken such an initiative. This whole idea of establishment of Economic lab is of Dr Fadnavis.
