THE COVID-19 pandemic has not just rattled lives of millions but has put Indian healthcare machinery under tremendous pressure. From doctors to nurses to support staff, thousands of healthcare professionals have fallen to this deadly virus which continues to wreak havoc. It’s not just doctors who are leading the battle against COVID across the world but nurses are also playing a crucial role. Every year May 12 is celebrated as International Nurses Day to remember Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.
 
The day this year is being observed amid the ongoing second wave in India and it highlights the contribution of nurses in the entire healthcare system and their commitment towards healthy India Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised nursing staff, saying their sense of duty, compassion and commitment towards a healthy India is exemplary. In a tweet, Modi said, “International Nurses Day is a day to express gratitude to the hardworking nursing staff, who is at the forefront of fighting COVID-19. Their sense of duty, compassion and commitment towards a healthy India is exemplary.” Home Minister Amit Shah lauded nursing professionals, saying they are working relentlessly to serve mankind.
 
“I express my sincere gratitude towards all the nurses, the saviours of humanity on this #InternationalNurses Day.” “Being the frontline warriors, our nurses are working relentlessly to serve mankind. We salute our nursing staff for their selfless care, devotion and commitment,” Shah said on his official Twitter account. Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu lauded nurses for rendering untiring and selfless service during the coronavirus pandemic, and described them as a critical link in India’s health infrastructure. “On International Nurses Day, I compliment our nurses for rendering untiring, selfless service to the people. They have been at the forefront during this pandemic, being a critical link in our health infrastructure,” the Vice President Secretariat tweeted quoting Naidu. “Let us all express our gratitude to them for their invaluable contribution in advancing the health and well-being of the people,” Naidu said.
