No need to fear from mucormycosis, immediate treatment necessary: Dr Jambhorkar

EVEN THOUGH there is a steep decline in the cases of coronavirus all over the country, the nation is fighting against another new disease in mucormycosis. There is a sense of fear among the citizen as mucormycosis has claimed several lives. There is no reason to get afraid of this disease. There is a need to create awareness about mucormycosis among the citizen including sportspersons, opined Dr Sachin Jambhorkar. Dr Jambhorkar was speaking during the National Seminar on Impact of COVID-19 on Mental and Physical Health, Precautions and Remedies. The five-day online seminar was jointly organised by Academy of Physical Education; Priyadarshini Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Wardha; MB Patel College, Sakoli; NMD College, Gondia and Late Nirdhan Patil Waghaye Mahavidyalaya, Lakhani. On the fourth day of the session, Dr Jambhorkar said the disease should not be taken lightly and should be treated immediately when the symptoms arise.
 
“The best remedy to treat mucormycosis is to detect it as early as possible and start treatment by consulting the doctor,” said Dr Jambhorkar. “Mucormycosis is a fungal infection which affects those who got infected with coronavirus or are under treatment. It starts from nose and spreads towards other parts including eyes and brain. Those suffering from diabetics, cancer are prone to this disease,” said Jambhorkar. Sportspersons with symptoms like redness in eyes, headache, cough, trouble in breathing, vomiting should immediately contact the doctors,” he opined.
 
“Sportspersons should always wear mask and should maintain hygiene and social distancing to avoid getting affected by COVID or mucormycosis,” he said. Dr V Kaur, Deputy Director, Lovely Professional University presided over the webinar. He said that sportspersons should take proper care of their health and take correct treatment if they get infected. Dr Sharda Mahajan, Principal, NMD College, Gondia. Dr Sharad Suryawanshi, Director, Department of Physical Education and Sports, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University and Dr Anil Karvande, President, Academy of Physical Education were prominently present. Dr Pravin Kumar of NMD College Gondia conducted the webinar while Dr Sudhir Sahare proposed a vote of thanks.
