MESSAGE FROM SEA_1 &

FIRST cyclone Tauktae and then cyclone Yaas, both have delivered an important message to the country -- Be ready for intense cyclones in the future. Both the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea have seen increased intensity in cyclones in the last three decades making India’s large coastline a vulnerable region. India Meteorological Department (IMD) and climate scientists have marked climate change as a prime reason behind frequency of intense cyclones. It is evident in a profound manner in the Arabian Sea, as per IMD. There are solid reasons to believe the IMD’s findings given the rapid change in climate pattern in the Indian seas. This year, Indian seas have been exceptionally warm with sea surface temperatures reaching as high as 32 degrees Celsius. Such atmospheric and ocean conditions give rise to frequent formation of cyclones. This is going to be the new norm in the seas due to climate change. Apart from precautions like shifting people from coastal regions before cyclones, India has to focus on nature-based solutions to reduce disaster risks. Restoring mangroves is one solution but it has to be backed by making climate-resilient infrastructure compulsory.
