DESPITE his various stints as Union Minister in different Governments, Chaudhary Ajit Singh, who lost his battle to COVID-19 at the age of 82, remained an accidental politician, happy to remain confined to his own domain. Yet, the biggest achievement for this graduate from IIT-Kharagpur and Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago was the way he managed the legacy of his legendary father late Chaudhary Charan Singh. Though he could never match the high position in national politics that his father, the former Prime Minister, enjoyed, Chaudhary Ajit Singh did carve a place for his own charisma as a tall farmer leader in the Hindi belt. The prime position his party Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) occupied in Uttar Pradesh and also in various coalition governments at the Centre was the fruit of all toil Chaudhary Ajit Singh made with his astuteness and deal-making skills. He was not averse to changing sides and even ideologies if that suited the larger goal of his party and farmers, cutting across region. From backing Congress to joining BJP-led NDA to holding reins of all factions of Lok Dal, Ajit Singh made sure his political survival is not hampered by rigidity of thought.
