Yoga and science walk hand in hand: Dr Joshi

“Traditional Yoga and Science walk hand in hand. Yoga, which is originated in ancient India, is a gift to the world. It is important to perform pranayam, yoga and then carry out scientific analysis of it,” said Dr Lakshimnarayan Joshi, Founder Head, Department of Yogic Science and Dean, Student Welfare, Uttarakhand Sanskrit University, Haridwar.
Dr Joshi was speaking during the online workshop on Yoga and Holistic Health organised by Department of Sports and Physical Education, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University; Open and Distance Learning Centre Kavi Kalidas Sanskrit University, Ramtek, Shri Binzani City College and Nabira Mahavidyalaya, Katol.
Dr Devendra Wankhede, HoD, Sports and Physical Education Department, Dhanwate National College presided over the workshop.
Dr Joshi was delivering his lecture on the topic “Scientific Application of Asanas and Pranayama” on the second day of the workshop.
Dr Joshi explained how asanas should be performed according to the age of the person
He also guided the participants as to which asana should not be performed during certain ailments. “It is important for yoga gurus to inform their students when to perform which asana and when not to perform when there are certain ailments,” said Dr Joshi.
Dr Joshi said that regular practice of yoga helps in maintaining blood pressure. “The nerves and veins of the body also works properly if one performs yoga daily,” he said.
“In today’s fast moving and modern world, students tend to spend long hours on laptops, mobile and computers.
“Their sitting postures and physical movements of the body get restricted. The lack of proper rest to the body forces in lack of sound sleep. This makes way to unnecessary tension, headache, lack of concentration, obesity and other ailments. All these can be cured by daily yoga practice,” Dr Joshi said.
Dr Joshi asked the students to perform certain forms of yoga for a fit body and healthy life.
“Students should regularly perform pawanmuktasna, suryanamaskar, sarvagasana, janushirasana. Yogasana is also beneficial in curing asthama and other heart related problems,” mentioned Dr Joshi.
He said that regular practice of yoga helps in strengthening lungs and improves breathing capacity. It also helps in reducing weight, improves immunity and metabolism.
National level yoga player Abhijeet Gode was the special guest for the second day of the national workshop.
On the occasion, Dr Sharad Suryawanshi, Director, Department of Sports and Physical Education, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Dr Ghanshyam Makkasare, Sports Council Member, RTMNU, Dr Sonali Shirbhate, Dr Amit Tembhurne, Dr Pravin Kumar, Dr Renushri Bansod and others were also present. The session was conducted by Dr Sanjay Chaudhary, SB City College. Dr Sujit Maitre, Principal, SB City College made introductory remark while Dr Tejsingh Jagdale of Nabira Mahavidyalaya, Katol, proposed a vote of thanks.
