THE news that the Ministry of Defence has signed a technology an MoU -- Memorandum of Understanding -- for as many as eleven airport surveillance radars for Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guards with the private sector tech-major Mahindra Telephonics makes a happy reading. More and more such instances are coming to fore, indicating true development the nation is achieving on technology front involving even defence and security merchandise. Such a picture was not available until recently, when the country depended mostly on imports of such advanced systems and paid through its nose to acquire those. In recent years, however, India’s technology sector has registered major advancements and now manufactures whatever the country needs to a big extent. While on the surface this may appear only a natural process, the country has taken a lot of efforts to reach this stage in the past few years. The path has been arduous, to say the least. Thanks to a collective effort as per the national agenda, India is becoming almost self-sufficient in many sectors of technology. Private sector has played a major role, alongside public sector -- almost as if it is a welcome joint venture.
