THE Supreme Court has come out with its concern about the misuse of Section 124A (sedition) with a pointed query, asking the Centre why it was not repealing the British era penal law. Keeping aside the legal side of the argument if one sees the political colour the sedition law has assumed over the last few years, then one understands the necessity of the law in the Constitution. Of course, the honourable Supreme Court will deliberate on all aspects of the law before settling the bunch of petitions on its desk, but one is also forced to ponder over the audacity of some people who have a penchant to choose the extremes while “misusing the freedom of expression”. The penal law has to be seen from the point of this extremity where people are allowed a free run while openly proclaiming “Bharat tere tukde honge...” The existence of sedition law is a major tool against such anti-national forces that have the tendency to incite people and cause disturbance in law and order in the country. Yet again, the political community and sensible elements in the society must think about this dark fact before removing a potent penalty to punish the black sheep in the society that can easily pollute atmosphere of harmony.
