STEP will provide Sahu, who has been working on grand unified theories, a Beyond Standard Model physics that explains neutrino mass, dark matter, and B physics simultaneously, an invaluable opportunity to train for 9 months in Trieste

Purushottam Sahu from Saraipalli, Chhattisgarh, has been selected for the prestigious Sandwich Training Educational Programme (STEP). STEP is the flagship of the International Centre for Theoritical Physics (ICTP) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Presently, Purushottam Sahu is a PhD Scholar in Physics from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bhilai. The programme aims to strengthen the capability of young scientists and researchers from developing countries to better contribute and serve the scientific and economic development of their home countries. STEP fellowships enrich doctoral research by giving scholars access to world-class research and training facilities at ICTP and IAEA. Sahu will work on his PhD thesis project, titled “The quest for new physics through the unified lens of neutrino and flavor physics” under supervision of Dr Sudhanwa Patra (IIT-Bhilai) and Professor Serguey Petcov, his co-advisor from the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) and the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), Italy.

He has been working on grand unified theories (GUT), a Beyond Standard Model physics which explains neutrino mass, dark matter, and B physics simultaneously. His proposed research brings all of these within the purview of gauge theories and grand unification. STEP will provide Sahu an invaluable opportunity to train for 9 months in State of the art labs in Trieste. He will undergo training for 5 months in the year 2022 and 4 months in 2023.
