TWO off-duty Firemen rescued a middle-aged man who was apparently attempting to drown himself in Gandhisagar the other day. Vikram Naryan Dome, driver-cum-operator and Shankar Ganpat Bijwe, Leading Fireman, attached to Fire & Emergency Department of Nagpur Municipal Corporation, were returning home from office after their shift ended. Around 4.20 pm, they stopped on spotting a man jumping into Gandhisagar. Dome quickly dived into the lake and pulled him out. Dome and Bijwe placed him on his back on the flat surface of the wall and resuscitated him. With the assistance of Ganeshpeth Police, they drove him to Mayo Hospital.

Chief Fire Officer Rajendra Uchake told ‘The Hitavada’ that the man, who attempted suicide, has been identified as Ravindra Madhukar Mahale (54), a resident of Nehru Nagar. He was first taken to Mayo Hospital and later shifted to Kingsway Hospital by his relatives, he added. Lauding the exemplary courage displayed by the duo in rescuing Mahale, Uchake informed that the attempt-to-suicide case was being probed by Ganeshpeth Police.
