On the occasion of International Plastic-Free Day, a large plastic wall has been built in the New Market area in Bhopal. Plastic wrappers used for packing different food items were used in construction the wall. The purpose behind building the wall is to disseminate message to the people to not use polythene bags. Many people visited the area to get a glimpse of the polythene wall. BMC Staffers said that the amount of plastic waste is increasing in Bhopal every year. Plastic bags are not recyclable and it takes more than 500 years to be completely destroyed. All this plastic either goes into the sea through rivers and streams or remains buried in the ground for years.

It affects the life of living organisms in the sea. The destitute cattle on the land eat it as food and millions of animals die every year for this reason. Humans also suffer a lot due to the pollution caused by plastic. For the awareness of people, the Bhopal Municipal Corporation organised this awareness program in collaboration of various organisations. Apart from this, BMC officials and other organizations are going to different areas of the city and urging the vegetable vendors to not give vegetables and fruits in polythene. At the same time, an appeal has been made to Bhopalites to bring cloth bags from home when they visit market.
