The Madhya Pradesh Nurses Association has called off its ongoing strike following the orders of High Court which instructed them to join duty within 24 hours on Wednesday. Simultaneously, High Court also instructed State Government to consider nurses’ demand. State President of Madhya Pradesh Nurses Association Manju Meshram said that respecting the HC’s orders, the strike has been called off and all the nurses will return to their duty from Thursday. The strike of nurses working under the Department of Medical Education (DME), which continued for the eighth day, spelled trouble and suffering for patients admitted at Hamidia Hospital and other empanelled hospitals on Wednesday. A large number of nursing staff demonstrated in front of the Trauma and Emergency Unit of Hamidia Hospital.

The protest was also joined by the nurses of Kamla Nehru Gas Relief Hospital, while on Tuesday the matron and senior nurses had taken part in the protest. The nurses were adamant for a pay scale of Rs 4,800 and their current pay scale is Rs 2,800. The High Court had declared their strike as ‘illegal’ and had asked the nurses to withdraw their strike and return to work from July 8. Nevertheless, the patients who visited out patient departments (OPD) and Emergency of the hospital and several others who are admitted to various wards, too, were badly hit by the strike. However, the worst-hit were resident doctors who had to perform surgeries of the black fungus patients, but could not do so in absence of the nursing staff.
