The Bhilai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been launched the Roka-Chheka drive and caught stray cattle, roaming on city streets to ensure smooth vehicular traffic and also to curtail menace of stray animals within Steel City limits. Under Roka-Chheka drive, the demolition squad of civic authority has captured as many as 104 stray cattle’s and transport these cattle’s to gothan (cattle byre) located near at Bhilai Nagar Railway Station, Kosa Nala, Nehru Nagar. After giving warning and imposing fine on cattle owners, the BMC authority handed over their cattle’s to them. But, some stray cattle have been put in the gothan shelter for more than 10 days and no one has come forward to claim them.

In wake of complaints made by city residents about filthy cattle byres, the BMC officials have also warned cattle owner’s to don’t let their cattle’s to roam freely on city roads, otherwise stern action will be initiated against them. In the same context, dairy owners and cattle owners have signed resolution letter with BMC authority and pledged for taking care of their cattle’s and not letting them to wander in streets. In the drive, the BMC officials requested the cattle owners to keep their cattle at homes.

They urged cattle byre owners for keeping their surrounding clean and hygienic and said that blatant functioning of cattle byres in every nook of city has also adversely affecting on people’s health and making people vulnerable of falling sick of malaria, dengue and other vector borne diseases. But, such efforts and stringent action initiated by Bhilai Municipal Corporation (BMC) seem to have had little effect on owners of stray cattle, which continue to stall traffic in the city. Despite Roka-Chheka drive, Hundreds of stray cows and bulls are seen roaming some of the major city roads, especially in market places. The officials from BMC authority have said that they have intensified efforts to control stray cattle and noticed that owners are allowing their cattle to graze save expenses on the feed and shelter.
