The Maoist attack at the mining site of Nagpur-based Jayaswal Neco Industries Limited (JNIL) in Chhattisgarh’s Narayanpur district had caused damage to the equipment under Rs 5 crore. Heavily armed Maoists on July 3 had raided the mining site of the company and set the construction equipment on fire. The rebels brutally bashed Jayaswal Neco’s employee and workers that resulted in the death of a supervisor engaged by the contract company. JNIL had set-up an integrated steel plant in Siltara Growth Centre, Raipur, Chhattisgarh and the company had been allotted iron ore mines in Aamdai of Chhota Dongar Tehsil in Narayanpur district.

 

The company had proposed production capacity enhancement of iron ore mines from 0.05 million tonne per annum (MTPA) to 2.95 MTPA besides 1.0 MTPA beneficiation plant in a lease area of 192.25 hectares under reserve forest. According to JNIL official site, the expansion proposal is under consideration for clearances. The construction work was going on under the capacity expansion plan. With reference to the above matter, we would like to submit for your information that the development work at the mine is being carried out by hired equipment from vendors on contract basis. The attack has caused damage primarily to such hired equipment.

 

As per contractual terms, the responsibility to insure the equipment lies with the vendor, JNIL said in a regulatory filing on Thursday. As the area is very remote and the situation is tense at the site, the assessment of damage and loss remains difficult at present, the company said, adding that on an initial assessment, the damage caused to the hired equipment is under Rs 5 crore.
