‘Thumari Gayan’, ‘Kathak’ performances impress audience at ‘Gamak’ series

A melodious performance of ‘Thumari Gayan’ followed by ‘Kathak’ folk dance was witnessed on Saturday evening under the online cultural series ‘Gamak’. In view of the Covid-19 pandemic, various academies of the Government of Madhya Pradesh, are jointly organising ‘Gamak’. It is a virtual cultural series, focused on the activities of multiple disciplines, being broadcasted online on social media platforms. The programme began with 'Thumri Gayan' by Vinod Mishra of Urdu Sahitya Academy, in which he first sang a Thumri based on Raga-Peelu ‘Tum Radhe Bano Shyam’. This was followed a beautiful presentation of Thumri – ‘Sajan Mora Chhod Gayo’ based on Raga-Mishra Bhairavi. Mishra was accompanied by Ramanand Tiwari in vocals, Ramanand Tiwari on harmonium and Ayush Mishra and Richa Pandey as co-singer. A Kathak performance was given by Sanyukta Sharma on Thumari- ‘Neer Bharan Kaise Jaun Sakhi Ab’ based on Rag-Tilak. Mishra received his primary education in music from his father PP Mishra, after which he took formal education of music from Dr Jayshree Mishra of Banaras and Rajkishore Mishra of Rewa.
 
After completing the national scholarship, he got the formal education of Dhrupad singing from the world famous Dhrupad singer Ustad Zia Fraiduddin Dagar Sahab at Dhrupad Center Bhopal. Presently, he is getting formal education in Khayal and Thumri singing from International singer Pt Ajay Pohankar. He has received state's first prize in the Inter-University Youth Festival and a national scholarship for Dhrupad singing. He is also providing formal music education to the students at Tansen Sangeet Kala Kendra, Satna. Mishra is an established artist of Khayal, Thumri and Bhajan genres. Today’s event On August 8, at 7 pm, under the ‘Gamak’ series a lecture on the theme ‘Theatre Tradition of Ujjaini’ by senior theater artist Shripad Joshi on behalf of Kalidas Sanskrit Academy, Ujjain will be organised. Senior theater artist Girijesh Vyas will also preside over the programme. The lecture will be broadcast live on the Department's YouTube channel and Facebook page.
