“A patent is important simply because it ensures the protection of invention/ creativity/ imagination regardless of whether it is a product, a design, or a process,” Kottawar said Business Bureau ; “IF YOU have any unique idea that is totally original get it patented,” said the Intellectual Property Rights expert Ajinkya Kottawar, who has also patented a lot of unique things in his name. Kottawar was speaking at the ‘Wisdom Hour’ organised by Vidarbha Management Association (VMA) on the topic ‘Patent your innovative ideas using Intellectual Property Rights’. He further said that product, project, idea, formula, concept, software and many more things can be patented.

“A patent is important simply because it ensures the protection of invention/ creativity/ modification/ imagination regardless of whether it is a product, a design, or a process,” he said. “If the invention meets certain criteria in terms of originality and utility, a patent will safeguard it for up to 20 years and in so many countries as one may want to. Patent is one type of Intellectual Property Right (IPR), the other types include Trademark, Design Registration, Copyrights, Geographical Identification and Trade Secret,” he said. While further explaining about having patent for invention, Kottawar said that patent will prevent misuse of intellectual property, it helps in presenting and publishing original research, it secures the invention and it gives the inventor the legal rights of invention.

IPR should be thus used to secure intellectual properties. From a small blade that is used in shaving instrument to most ultramodern chips used in high-end electronic devices everything can be patented. It could be done under the Patent Act 1970 and it’s several sections, he pointed out. The procedure includes invention disclosure form, non-disclosure agreement, patent portability, filing patent draft, publication of patent, examination and granting of patent, added Kottawar. Vidarbha Management Association is based at Nagpur and meets every Sunday at 10.30 am. VMA is dedicated to impart learning related to business management and leadership to its members. VMA is a non profit organisation and is currently in its 17th year of operation.
