THE legal battle between ace paddler Manika Batra and the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) is in line of the grudge matches being witnessed in India’s sporting fraternity, especially in the national sporting federations. Many a player has taken legal recourse in the last few years against what they call as discriminatory policies, pressure tactics and also wrong selections depriving them of their rightful place in the national team. Manika Batra has also moved court with a series of complaints including pressure by national coach Soumyadeep Roy to “throw away” a match in Tokyo Olympics and no call-up to national event for not attending a preparatory camp. There is no point in taking side of the parties involved in the legal battle till the honourable Delhi High Court decides the case on its merits. However, there is definitely a need for the Centre to have a relook at the federation’s working to find whether there are some ego issues or loopholes that allow such nasty issues to crop up time and again. While an athlete must get what he/she deserves, the administration part, too, needs to be streamlined in a professional manner to avoid further embarrassing situations.
