NO CHEERS

THE decision by Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in Maharashtra to allow supermarkets and walk-in stores to sell wine manufactured in the State as part of its new wine policy needs to be condemned by all quarters of the society. For, it reeks of decaying morals of the ruling class and also looks as a secret pact to suit some influential lobbies in the corridors of power. The MVA leaders are defending the decision with lame excuses as “wine cannot be equated with liquor” but even the layman knows the dirty repercussions of the faulty policy. There is nothing again wine or similar products in particular but it is about promoting a culture of alcoholism even if the drink contains minor percentage of alcohol. Making wine available in supermarkets and shops would be bringing the drink in the category of daily goods. Easy availability will automatically take away the ethical and social issues related to alcohol which in turn may have dangerous effect on the young population. There just cannot be any justification for the move. There is also no logic in the Government stand that the policy was brought in to double farmers’ income. This section of ryots is too minimal to be counted as the entire farming community.
