Amid rising cases of COVID-19, it seems Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) is in the trouble of its own. It all began with the resignation of Dr Avinash Gawande, Medical Superintendent whose administration during previous surges of the coronavirus cases in the city was commendable. A day before, 160 medical teachers resigned from the Post Graduate Guideship. Now, two important departments in Super Speciality are on the verge of closure. Dr Avinash Gawande has rendered service as Medical Superintendent in an efficient manner. During the first and second waves of the pandemic, Dr Gawande acted as catalyst because of which GMCH did not face any major problem. Though he has mentioned the workload as the reason in his resignation letter, everyone was taken aback when Dr Gawande put in his papers. Second issue is related to Super Speciality Hospital that still works under GMCH. In Super Speciality Hospital (SSH) two departments -- Endocrinology and Neurology are on the verge of closure.

The last man who left Endocrinology Department was Dr Sunil Ambulkar, a well-known Endocrinologist. Dr Sanjay Ramteke, noted Neurophysician is rendering services in Neurology Department since long. Dr Manish Shrigiriwar, as then in-charge of SSH, had tried to develop some departments so that Doctorate of Medicine or Post Graduate degree in Super Speciality courses could be started. On Dr Shrigiriwar’s request stalwarts like Dr Ambulkar, Dr Sanjay Ramteke had joined the respective departments. In both these departments a complete structure was planned. It was proposed that these departments would have required staff of Professor, two Associate Professors and three Assistant Professors. But due to recent developments, both these departments are staring at bleak future. When contacted Dr Raj Gajbhiye, Acting Dean of GMCH told ‘The Hitavada’, “Dr Gawande has mentioned the reason of his resignation so I have nothing to say more on it. In case of departments of Endocrinology and Neurology, both Dr Ambulkar and Dr Ramteke are not continued which is a fact. I am not aware of why it was done.”
