Birth anniversary of Shri Guru Gobind Singh today

Devotees from various places were coming to seek blessings of Shri Guru Gobind Singhji. Guruji was conversing with his devotees. Suddenly, He became silent and shut his eyes. Devotees also were silent. After a few minutes, Guruji opened his eyes and told a Sevadar about a Sikh who was weeping under a tree. Guruji told the Sevadar, “At times, he becomes silent and then suddenly starts speaking to himself. Bring that Sikh to me with love and affection.” The Sevadar reached the place where Guruji had told him to go. There, he found a person speaking to himself under a tree just as Guruji had told him. Sevadar saw him saying to himself, “Satguru’s doors are open for everyone. He loves his disciples like his sons. How is it possible that he has shut his doors for me? But the gatekeeper says that Guruji has refused my entry in the Darbaar. If I ask Cheto Masand, he ignores me saying that Guruji has accepted my Bheta and blessed me. But if this is so then why am I not allowed to go in his Darbar?

The gatekeeper will certainly not lie. Something must be wrong in me. I must be a sinner.” Saying this, he started weeping again. The Sevadar sent by Guruji told that Sikh, “Guruji has called you. Come with me. No one goes unnoticed in Guru’s Darbaar. Everybody’s wish is fulfilled there.” The Sikh was ecstatic on hearing such affectionate words and started praising Guruji. When both reached the gate, the gatekeeper again stopped the Sikh from entering Darbar. The Sevadar asked, “With whose permission are you stopping him from entering Darbaar?” He replied that Cheto Masand had asked him to do so. The Sevadar replied that he had been called by Guruji. The gatekeeper bowed his head and gave way to them. The Sikh fell to Guruji’s feet and said, “Guruji! You are omnipotent.” Guruji said, “Oh Gursikha! What have you brought for me?” He replied, “Whatever is there with me, all is yours. I have already sent a small present through Cheto Masand.” Guruji asked his accountant.

He said that the Sikh’s money had been deposited in the treasure. The Sikh said, “I had also given a bangle with diamonds studded on it.” However, Guruji’s accountant said that there was no such mention of a bangle. Guruji smiled and ordered them to call Cheto Masand. Cheto Masand came and was startled to see that Sikh. The Sikh said to Cheto Masand that his diamond studded bangle had not yet reached Guruji. Shrewd Cheto Masand said, “Why are you lying? You must have given the bangle to someone else. Why are you blaming me?” Guruji said, “Cheto! I don’t need that bangle. You may keep it with yourself but at least show it to me so that this Sikh’s sentiments are not hurt.” Cheto Masand got angry and started shouting on the Sikh. He said to Guruji, “Even you think he is truthful and I am a liar. Even you don’t believe me.” Guruji said, “Cheto! Tell the truth, otherwise truth will be unfolded right now.” Cheto said, “You are blaming me unnecessarily.” Guruji called five of his disciples and said, “There is a diamond studded bangle placed in a box on the roof of Cheto Masand’s house.”

He asked them to break the lock and bring that bangle. Cheto Masand was dumbstruck. The bangle was presented by the disciples. Guruji asked that Sikh, “Oh Gursikha! Is this your bangle?” The Sikh nodded his head. Guruji looked towards the Sikh very affectionately, and said angrily to Cheto, “Oh, Cheto! You are a liar as well as shrewd. You must have now realized who is right -- you or my Sikh.” In this way, Guruji loved justice. He knew what was right and what was wrong. He always fulfilled wishes of his Sikhs. Guruji explained that one should not be influenced by greed and always serve the Almighty and remember Him. Even Gurbani states, “Antar Kapat Chukaavahu Mere Gursikhahu Nihakapat Kamaavahu Har Ki Har Ghaal Nihaal Nihaal Nihaal.”(Shri Guru Granth Sahib, page 978), meaning that one must refrain from shrewd behavior and greed. He must serve unfraudulently and remember the Almighty, and seek his blessings. Gurbani also explains, “Man Mere Bhule Kapat Na Keejai. Ant Nibera Tere Jeea Pahi Leejai.”(Shri Guru Granth Sahib, page 656). Shri Guru Gobind Singhji was born in Patna on Poha Sudi Saptami, Samvat 1723, whose equivalent English date this year is January 9, 2022 (Sunday). Lakhs of salutes to him on his 355th birth anniversary. (The author is Convenor, Shri Kalgidhar Satsang Mandal.) n
