FORMER skipper Komal Zanzad’s brilliant opening spell helped Vidarbha record a crushing six-wicket win over Chandigarh in their last league match of the Women’s T20 Tournament at Dr PVG Raju ACA Sports Complex, Vizianagaram, on Saturday. After restricting Chandigarh to 85-8, Vidarbha eves raced to the target getting 88-4 in 13.3 overs to book their berth in the quarter-finals.
What came as icing on the top was the fact that girls topped their Group C above Bengal and Mumbai, who were ousted having finished third. Incidentally, Vidarbha’s only loss came against their State-mates. Vidarbha eves ended their league assignment with five wins from six (most in the group), to collect 20 points, Bengal, too, qualified with 16 points.
Chandigarh won the toss and invited trouble as left-arm seamer Komal had opener Suman declared lbw on fourth ball of first over of the match and then shattered stumps of Shivani Thakur next ball to be on a hat-trick that did not happen. Soon Kanchan Nagwani ran out Manisha Badhan for one and Komal removed the other opener Monika Pandey (10) on first ball of her third over. She had the third batter for nought accounting for Nandani Sharma being caught by skipper Disha Kasat, who let the bowler on fire to complete her quota in one go.
Komal bowled 21 dot balls and gave away just four runs in four overs of the devastating spell. Chandigarh never recovered from that assault and just crawled further. Vaishnavi Khandkar snared two wickets for 15 from her three overs.
Disha Kasat, once again led the chase top-scoring with 30-ball 39 that included five crisp boundaries.
She jumped one rung to be at second pace in the top-batters’ list with 225 runs. Shivani Dharne made 19-ball 17 with two fours and six at the top while Bharti Fulmali, who struck the winning boundary, made 20 from 18 balls that contained three fours.
