YASH Rathod’s unbeaten hundred, his third of the tournament, helped Vidarbha to a respectable score on opening day of their Col CK Nayudu Trophy quarter-final match against Uttar Pradesh at Alembic 2 Cricket Ground in Vadodara on Tuesday.
The one-down southpaw Rathod (127*) was still at the crease having played 260 balls hitting 15 fours and a maximum and being there for 87 overs. Giving him company was skipper Siddhesh Wath who was not out on a well-compiled 51 that came from 113 delivers and included six fours and a six. The duo added 155 for the unfinished fifth wicket partnership taking the reigning champions to 270-4 in 90 overs at end of the day.
Wath had no hesitation to bat first but makeshift opener Mandar Mahalle (4) got out on last ball of the third over. In-form opener Aman Mokhade (53; 109b, 6x4) was joined by Rathod and the duo showed that they were ready for the grind. Just after getting to his fifty, Mokhade got out.
Last match’s double centurion Mohit Kale (6) and centurion Yash Kadam (19) did not last long. Wath cut on his basic instincts of going for big shots and in company of an assured Rathod played a watchful and responsible knock.
Vidarbha made just one change to the playing XI that crushed Railways in the last league match by including seamer Sanmesh Deshmukh in place of batsman Nayan Chavan. For UP, young right-arm seamer Aaqib Khan picked two wickets while Kunal Yadav and Ankit Choudhary snared one wicket each.
Onus is on Vidarbha batsmen to bat at least for another couple of sessions on second day to make sure they need not bat again in the game.
