SEA Swimming Coaching Centre, Juhu, Mumbai; National Institute of Swimming (NIS), Nagpur District Amateur Aquatic Association and JD Sports Foundation in a joint co-operation with Indian Divers and Explorers Association (IDEA) organised India’s largest adventure sea swimming expedition commemorating 75th Year of India’s Independence.
For the expedition, 50 swimmers from all over Maharashtra were short-listed. After medical assessment and verification of the documents of the swimmers, 40 swimmers was finalised. The expedition had swimmers from a wide range of age from nine to 60 years and had male and female swimmers. The expedition also had 2 para swimmers. Among the 40 final swimmers, as many as 10 swimmers were from Nagpur.
Along with Nagpur, swimmers from Wardha, Amravati, Buldana, Aurangabad, Jalgaon, Dhule, Nashik, Pune and Raigad participated.
At the outset, the 31km Gateway of India to Elephanta Caves and back expedition was flagged off by Sunil Kedar, Sports Minister, Government of Maharashtra at 7:30 am from Gateway of India.
Addressing the gathering, Kedar said that like Mumbai Marathon, Swimming Marathon must also be conducted and will get full support from Government to promote youth swimmers of Maharashtra and inculcate in them adventurous skills through swimming.
He also praised State Sports Department’s former Joint Director Dr Jaiprakash Duble for promoting open water swimming providing platform to the swimmers through this expedition.
