“Congress used Gandhiji’s assassination at the hands of Nathuram Godse as an opportunity to get political mileage and to suppress other ideologies, otherwise it was a tough journey for Congress to go ahead in political field. It still using the same card to gain public sympathy,” expressed Uday Mahurkar, Information Commissioner, Government of India.
Information Commissioner, Mahurkar, who is an efficient administrative officer and a noted writer, was addressing a press conference on Thursday. He was in the city to deliver a lecture on his book ‘Veer Savarkar’ at Manas Bhavan auditorium on April 15, 2022 at 06.30 pm.
Enjoying the credit to redress more than 5000 RTIs during his limited tenure of 1 year, Mahurkar has written many books on national issues.
Mahurkar said that he strongly believes on ‘No condition when it comes to national interest’ and hence, avoids to see the incidents in the perspectives of Hindu or Muslim.
He further added that in 1956 Barrister Attlee who had given us independence by withdrawing British rule from India, spent two days in the palace of PV Chakraborty was the acting Governor and Chief Justice of Bengal, during his tour of India. In a prolonged discussion regarding the real factors that had led the British to quit India, Chakraborthy repeatedly asked Barrister Atley, since Gandhi’s Quit India Movement had tapered off quite sometime ago and in 1947 no such new compelling situation had arisen that would necessitate a British departure, why did they left.
As Chakraborty wanted to know did India win independence because of the non-violent movement led by Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Nehru or was it the impact of
Subhash Chandra Bose’s Indian National Army that made the British panic and leave India?
In his reply, Barrister Atley cited several reasons, the principal among them being the erosion of loyalty to the British crown among the Indian army and Navy personnel as a result of Military activities of Netaji.
When Chakraborty asked about extent of Gandhi’s influence upon the British decision to quit India, Attlee clearly said that Congress played negligible role to influence British rule to declare India’s independence, in fact it was the terror of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s INA that made British government realized that they can not rule India for long. This is clearly mentioned by the noted historian, RC Mazumdar in his book ‘A History of Bengal’.
