NAGPUR has produced long distance runner champions in the past. And the tradition continues.
City’s athletes proved that when it comes to long distance championships, they are far ahead of all others at the Senior State Athletics Championship which got under way in Pune on Thursday.
Nagpur athletes —Shadab Pathan, Nikita Raut and Prajakta Godbole — set the track on fire on the opening day winning gold and silver medals in 5000m races.
Ever improving Shadab Pathan stunned Asian Youth Championship gold medal winner Kisan Tadvi to clinch the gold medal in the men’s 5000m race.
He crossed the finish line in 14.33:51 secs to win the yellow metal.
Nashik’s Dinesh finished second (14.35.29s) while Tadvi, also of Nashik finished third (14.37.13s).
In women’s category, Nagpur athletes ruled the roost as they clinched top two spots.
Nikita clinched the 5000m gold in 16.33:31s pipped her city-mate Prajakta Godbole at second. Prajakta finished in 16.33:67s while Nashik’s Punam Sonawne claimed bronze in 19.26:46s.
Shadab, Nikita are athletes of Track Star Athletics Club while Prajakta trains at Namhya Foundation.
