A DISCIPLINED bowling effort by holders Vidarbha helped them restrict Mumbai to a reasonable score on Day One of their Col CK Nayudu Trophy final at Narendra Modi Stadium Ground A, Motera in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
Electing to bat on a flat but slow wicket, Mumbai were 226 for three wickets after 90 overs were bowled on opening day of the all important summit clash.
Mumbai started with Bhupen Lalwani (88; 200b, 10x4, 1x6) and Divyaansh. When the team reached 26 in 13.4 overs, the latter was trapped lbw by left-arm spinner Parth Rekhade for his individual score of seven.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Hardik Tamore joined Lalwani and the two weaved a little partnership for the second wicket stitching 76 from 197 balls as Lalwani completed his fifty. Rekhade’s striking partner in the series, another one of the same art, Harsh Dubey swing into action getting rid of Tamore who was caught by Mandar Mahalle for a patient 22 from 89 balls.
New man Armaan Jaffer dominated the third wicket union contributing 34 in his 52-run stand that came off 105 balls. When Lalwani was looking good for a three-figure mark, Vidarbha skipper reintroduced pacer Nachiket Bhute into the attack.
The lanky bowler gave the breakthrough his team needed by having Lalwani adjudged lbw with the batter 12 short of hundred.
The joy, though, was short-lived. Jaffer and Suved Parkar (29*; 74b, 2x4, 2x6), who has been Mumbai’s best bet this series with over five hundred runs with two hundreds and an equal number of half centuries, saw the day through without being separated. They have accumulated 72 runs from 156 balls so far.
Vidarbha bowlers will have to come up with some revised strategies to counter the two on the morrow. If they succeed in getting a couple of wickets early in the day, they might restrict the team from the same state.
