The onion and potato prices have increased from the past one and half months on the back of good demand. The onion prices of both red and white varieties have witnessed a rise of Rs 50 per 40 kg bag in the Kalamna wholesale market. “The onion prices have advanced by Rs 50 per 40 kg bag and potato prices have risen by Rs 150 per 40 kg bag on good demand by consumers,” said Jaiprakash Vasani, wholesale trader at the Kalamna wholesale market while speaking to The Hitavada.
The supply of onions from Gujarat has been exhausted a few months ago and the new crop is coming from places in Vidarbha like Amravati and Buldhana districts.
In the wholesale market, onion red variety is being quoted at Rs 400 per 40 kg bag to Rs 450 per 40 kg bag as compared to one and half month ago at Rs 350 per 40 kg bag to Rs 450 per 40 kg bag.
Similarly, the white onion prices are being quoted at Rs 350 per 40 kg bag to Rs 400 per 40 kg bag as compared to prices one and half months ago at Rs 300 per 40 kg bag to Rs 350 per 40 kg bag, he said.
On a daily average about 25 to 30 trucks are arriving at the wholesale market. The red onions are coming from places in Amravati district while white onions are coming from Buldana district, Vasani pointed out.
In the wholesale market, the potato prices are being quoted at Rs 600 per 40 kg bag to Rs 650 per 40 kg bag, as compared to prices one and half months ago at Rs 450 per 40 kg bag to Rs 500 per 40 kg bag. The prices are based according to the size and quality of commodity. On a daily average 15 to 20 trucks are coming from Agra, Kanpur and small quantities from Indore to the wholesale market, he said.
Currently, farmers and traders are stocking both the commodities in their warehouses. The stocks are stored and sold in small quantities for about six months till Diwali and Dashera, he added.
