YOUNG doubles pair of city’s Ritika Thaker and her Thane partner Simran Singhi went down fighting even as Indian women’s badminton team sailed into the knock-out stage of the Uber Cup Final after humbling USA 4-1 in a lopsided Group D match in Bangkok on Tuesday.
The pair of Ritika-Simran took to court after India were given an unassailable 3-0 lead by PV Sindhu, Tanisha Crasto-Treesa Jolly and Aakarshi Kashyap. Having already qualified for the next stage might have made the duo a bit complacent.
Together it was a debut match for Ritika-Simran for India senior team. They have been playing together for years now and had performed well in junior category.
Though they would have loved to begin the senior debut with victory, it was not that bad a show and definitely they can hold their heads high having put up a good fight.
The Indian pair, up against Lauren Lam and Kodi Tang Lee, could not find the tempo going their way. They lost the first game 12-21. Known for not giving it easily, Ritika-Simran bounced back to level the score taking the second game 21-17.
The USA combine then changed their strategy and it worked for them as they took the decider 21-13 to salvage some pride for their nation.
India, who had defeated Canada by an identical 4-1 margin in their opening tie, cemented their position in the top two spot in their group to qualify for the quarter-finals.
Indian women’s team, that has won two bronze medals in the past, will next face Korea on Wednesday in their last group match.
