Against the backdrop of cyber attacks on Indian websites, the Maharashtra Cyber conducted a detailed investigation and came to the conclusion that the attacks were being made by East Asian countries.
It may be mentioned here that the website of Institute of Science Nagpur was defaced by Cyber criminals who identified themselves as ‘DragonForce Malaysia,’ a ‘hacktivist’ group which means they claim to do activism through hacking.
A cyber expert stated that the ‘hacktivist’ had appealed Muslim hackers to attack Indian websites on June 10 and named the operation as ‘OpsPatuk’ (Operation Patuk). ‘Patuk’ is a Malay word which means ‘strike back. After hacking the website of Institute of Science, the hackers had put a message with #OpsPatuk in the first line.
Additional Director General (ADG) Madhukar Pandey and in-charge of Maharashtra Cyber came to conclusion after scanning of social media websites that the hacker groups have given a call to hack Indian defence websites after recent communal incidents in the country. “Many Indian websites were attacked in the last four-days and even the Thane police website was defaced Yesterday,” he said, in his message to police units. ADG Pandey further said that the exact nature of the attack was being investigated but primary information suggested that its origin was from some East Asian countries.
The Maharashtra Cyber has informed the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) Indian and National Informatics Centre (NIC) about the Cyber attack on Thane police website. “We are also co-ordinating with National Critical Information Infrastructure (NCII),” he said.
He further advised all police units to examine the vulnerabilities in their websites and plug the gaps. “Some of these websites may become vulnerable while undergoing transition to a safer environment,” he warned.
He also promised stern legal action against the hackers.
