After the announcement of Panchayat elections in Madhya Pradesh, the dates for the urban body elections have been announced on Wednesday. The elections will be held in two phases. The first phase will be held on July 6 and the second phase on July 13. The results for the first phase will be declared on July 17 and the results for the second phase on July 18. The model code of conduct has come into force as soon as the election dates are announced. Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior and Jabalpur will go to polls in the first phase. That is, voting will be held here on July 6. State Election Commissioner B P Singh gave this information in a press conference on Wednesday. He said that elections will be held in a total of 347 bodies. Voting will be held on 133 bodies in the first phase and 214 in the second phase. 19,977 polling stations have been set up in the State. Duty of 87,937 employees has been deployed for voting. Elections will be conducted through EVMs. The polling time will be from 7 am to 5 pm.
NOTA option: In every ward of Indore and Bhopal, 5 EVM reserves will be kept. NOTA option will be given. The Mayor of the municipal corporation will be directly elected by the public. The councillors will choose the president of the municipality and the city council. Case will be registered for giving a false affidavit. It will be necessary to get permission for meetings and rallies.
The tenure of 57 bodies is not yet complete: State Election Commissioner Basant Pratap Singh said that out of 378 urban bodies already constituted, the tenure of 321 bodies has been completed. The tenure of 57 bodies is yet to be completed. Elections will be held for 318 out of 321 civic bodies and for 29 municipal councils out of 35 newly-formed urban bodies, i.e. 347 urban bodies. Commissioner Singh said that in 347 urban bodies, 6,507 councillors and 16 Mayors of municipal corporations would be elected by the commission through a direct system. The President and Vice-Chairman will be elected by the elected councillors of the Municipal Council and the Municipal Councils. General information The final publication of the voters’ list of 402 urban bodies of the State has been decided on May 10. The final publication of the voters’ list of Khargone Municipal Council has been done on May 26. The final publication of voters’ list of Panna Municipal Council and newly-formed Barodiakalan Municipal Council in Sagar District is being done on June 6.
Action has been taken by the Madhya Pradesh Government for the expansion, contraction of the Gadhakota Municipal Council and Khuria Municipal Council Sagar, Malajkhand Municipal Council in Balaghat district. The process of division and reservation of wards in these three urban bodies is being done by the Madhya Pradesh Government. After the process of ward division, the voters’ list will be prepared by the commission.
The Government is taking action to divide the wards of the newly-formed six urban bodies. After this the commission will prepare the voters’ list.  Elections to urban bodies will be on party basis.
n There shall be a Returning Officer for each urban body and two or more Assistant Returning Officers to assist him.
n Total 55,000 EVMs are available for election. 30,761 EVMs will be used for the elections. 18,689 EVMs (including reserve EVMs) will be used in the first phase and 12,072 EVMs in the second phase.
