Although there is much uproar in Haryana and Rajasthan for the election of Rajya Sabha seats in the fear of cross-voting, but in Madhya Pradesh, all three candidates were elected unopposed. BJP candidates were elected on two seats and one seat went to the Congress. Congress’s Vivek Tankha is going to Rajya Sabha for the second consecutive time. At the same time, both the women members of BJP, Kavita Patidar and Sumitra Valmiki were also elected unopposed on Friday. Principal Secretary of Madhya Pradesh Assembly and returning officer for the election A P Singh announced the results as no other candidate had filed nomination for the three vacant seats as of Friday, the last date for the withdrawal of candidature. Vivek Tankha filed his nomination on May 30. On the other hand, BJP candidates Kavita Patidar and Sumitra Valmiki filed their nominations on May 31. Apart from these three nominations, no fourth candidate has filed nomination for the Rajya Sabha seat. The deadline for withdrawal of nominations ended on Friday at 3 pm. Therefore, the candidates of BJP and Congress were elected unopposed for all the three seats of Rajya Sabha from the State. Voting will no longer be held on June 10 due to unopposed election. By the evening the newly-elected MPs of BJP and Congress got their certificates. Kavita Patidar belongs to an OBC community while Sumitra Valmiki is a Dalit. Patidar had earlier served as a member of the State Women’s Commission, while Valmiki was elected as a Corporator of the Jabalpur Municipal Corporation thrice and had also served as an Alderman of the local body. The notification for RS polls was issued on May 24 under the schedule announced by the Election Commission for the Rajya Sabha elections. Nominations were to be filed by May 31. June 3 was the last date for withdrawal of nominations and voting is to be held on June 10. But there was no election situation in Madhya Pradesh. One in the account of Congress and two seats of Rajya Sabha went to the account of BJP.
