THE prices of some varieties of flowers increased as there was heavy demand due to the Ekadashi pooja on July10. Looking at the huge demand the prices of flowers like Marigold (Zendu), Desi Rose and Tuberose (Nishigandha) more than doubled in the Netaji wholesale market situated at Sitabuldi.
Prices of flowers used for pooja like Marigold, Desi Rose and Tuberose have more than doubled due to the good demand by retail flower vendors and consumers,” said Jaywant Rannaware, President of Mahatma Fule Pushp Utpadak Sanstha while speaking to The Hitavada.
In addition to this, Eid festival was also celebrated on Sunday which further added to the demand and rise in flower prices, he said. The flower prices would remain on the higher side till Guru Purnima which will be celebrated on July 13. In the wholesale market, Marigold (Zendu) is being quoted at Rs 120 per kg as compared to four days ago at Rs 30 per kg, Desi Rose at Rs 150 per kg to Rs 250 per kg as compared to Rs 50 per kg to Rs 60 per kg and Tuberose (Nishigandha) at Rs 250 per kg to Rs 300 per kg, as compared to Rs 60 per kg to Rs 80 per kg, he said.
Similarly, the Dutch Rose is being quoted at Rs 150 per bundle (20 pieces), Gerbera at Rs 30 bundle (10 pieces), Carnation at Rs 100 to Rs 180 per bundle (20 pieces), Orchid at Rs 300 per bundle to Rs 350 per bundle (20 pieces), he said.
Apart from this, the demand for pooja flowers used on regular basis is almost constant throughout the year with an exception during the festivities when there is heavy demand. Street side flower vendors are visiting the Netaji wholesale market on regular basis, he mentioned.
