After claiming the Under-17 girls title two days ago, rising Indian paddler Jennifer Varghese of Nagpur won the Under-15 crown as well in the ongoing Dr Shankarrao Chavan Memorial 1st Maharashtra State Ranking Table Tennis Tournament.
This could be the best preparation for Jennifer as she will be leaving for Sweden and Morocco for international meets next month. The State-level tournament was organised by Nanded District Table Tennis Association under the aegis of Maharashtra Table Tennis Association at Guru Govind Singh Stadium in Nanded.
On Saturday, top seed Jennifer clinched the Under-17 title defeating Nashik’s top seed Taneesha Kotecha.
On Monday, Jennifer, who is trained by Ujjwal Wani, got the better of Divyanshi Bhowmik of Thane in four straight games.
Unlike the Under-17 final where she lost the first game, Jennifer did not give her opponent any chance to dominate and won the opener 11-06. Divyanshi tried to test the Nagpur lass in the second game, but Jennifer took
it 12-10. The third game, too, was a close one but the city girl managed to win it 11-09 and then took the fourth game 11-08 to wrest the title.
Earlier in the semi-finals, 13-year-old Jennifer crushed 12th seed Urvi Churi in four straight games. Urvi tried to stretch Jennifer, but the Nagpur girl won the battle 11-8, 11-9, 11-2, 11-4.
In the quarter-finals, Jennifer defeated eighth seed Naisha Rewaskar 11-7, 11-8, 11-2.
In the women’s category, Jennifer lost the quarter-final.
Jennifer thanked her coach Ujjwal Wani, Nagpur District Table Tennis Association President Deepak Dhote, Secretary Ashutosh Potnis, members of NDTTA and her parents for her success.
