One of the world’s largest parathyroid tumors in chest was removed with minimally invasive technique at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College Hospital (NSCBMCH) during Parathyroid awareness month of July 2022. A 45-year-old woman from Jabalpur was suffering from backache since 2 years and consulted multiple doctors in Jabalpur and other cities. Multiple investigations like MRI, biopsies and plasma electrophoresis were done at multiple hospitals but her disease could not be diagnosed. She was also investigated for bone cancer and due to higher calcium level, a tumor was detected in her neck in CT scan. She already spent over Rs 2 lakh but got no relief.
Then, she approached Endocrine Surgeon, Dr Sanjay Yadav at the Department of Surgery, NSCBMCH, who detected parathyroid tumor progressing towards her chest. Dr Yadav planned for minimally invasive parathyroidectomy so that the tumor could be removed through neck without opening the chest. Her tumor was 6.5 cm while the world’s largest tumor was reported to be 8 cm.
The patient underwent free-of-cost surgery at NSCBMC. Team behind successful surgery included Dr Sanjay K Yadav (Breast Thyroid and Endocrine Surgeon), Dr Silodia, Dr Virendra, Dr Mohit, Dr Utkarsh, Dr Meenal, Dr Somya from surgery and Dr Narang, Dr Gopal Maravi from anaesthesia. Dr Yadav said that general public and even doctors are not much aware about this disease, and this causes delay in diagnosis and treatment.
Parathyroid glands are small endocrine glands that are found in the neck and regulate calcium level in the bone and blood. Dr Yadav further said that NSCBMCH’s Department of Surgery under the leadership of Dean Professor Gita Guin and HoD Professor Dhananjaya Sharma has become the only high volume endocrine surgery centre in central India in both government and private sector which already performed above 150 thyroid surgeries, 25 parathyroid surgeries and 25 adrenal surgeries within a year. Almost all advanced breast surgeries, endoscopic thyroid surgeries, laparoscopic adrenal surgeries and bariatric surgeries (weight loss surgery) are available here and that too at nominal cost.
