Although there is a sluggish demand in the market, the onion and potato prices have been marginally increasing for the past one month due to its low supply. The onion prices of both red and white varieties have witnessed a rise of Rs 40 for 40 kg bag in the Kalamna wholesale market.

Similarly, the prices of potato have moved up by Rs 40 for 40 kg bag on lower supplies in the wholesale market.

“Short supplies have lifted the prices of onions and potatoes by Rs 40 for 40 kg bag in the wholesale market,” said Jaiprakash Vasani, wholesale trader at the Kalamna wholesale market while speaking to The Hitavada.

During the rainy season, onions are being brought in from Buldhana and Nashik districts to meet the local demand. On an average about 10 to 12 trucks are arriving every day at the wholesale market as

compared to 20 to 30 trucks per day in the last month, Vasani pointed out.

However, in the Kalamna wholesale market both the white and red good quality onions are being quoted at Rs 560 to Rs 600 (Rs 14 per kg to Rs 15 per kg) for 40 kg bag, as compared to Rs 480 to Rs 520 (Rs 12 per kg to Rs 13 per kg) for 40 kg bag a month ago, he said. Likewise, the potatoes are coming from Madhya Pradesh and Kota, Rajasthan. On a daily average about 10 to 12 trucks are being unloaded, as compared to 15 to 20 trucks a month ago to meet the local demand.

In the wholesale market the good quality potatoes are being quoted at Rs 720 to Rs 760 (Rs 18 per kg to Rs 19 per kg) for 40 kg bag, as compared to Rs 600 to Rs 640 (Rs 15 per kg to Rs 16 per kg) for 40 kg bag, he said. In retail, potatoes are being sold for Rs 30 per kg and onions at Rs 25 per kg, depending on the locality.

During the summer, farmers and traders stock both the agri produce in their warehouses. Afterwards, the stocks are sold in small quantities in the market for about six months till Diwali and Dashera, he added.
