Books are amazing friends

One best book is equal to hundred good friends but one good friend is equal to a library: Dr APJ Abdul Kalam LIKE a true friend, a book always stays by our side. Books cheer us up, inspire us, educate us, lift our spirit, help us trouble shoot, accompany us in our highs and lows and also celebrate with us. As we celebrate the day of friendship, ‘The Hitavada’ delved into the unique bond one shares with books during a conversation with Shirin Chimthanawala. The youngster is City President of ‘Pick A Book’, a platform that aims to inculcate reading habit and create a community of readers, a space for people to learn, grow and share. This voracious reader, in her 20s, finds books as amazing companions. “Books add meaning to whatever we do in life.

They are there when we seek help or advice. They have a lot to offer. Just like a friend every book adds flavour to our life and makes it enjoyable. We can be our true self in the company of books,” Shirin says. So, how did the arts graduate got associated with PAB? “I have been reading all my life. After studies, I was looking for a reason to jump out of the bed every morning. Then, my friends introduced me to this amazing concept. Without a second thought I grabbed the opportunity. PAB first started in Nagpur on April 3, 2020.” Emphasising on how reading shapes one’s personality, Shirin adds, “For young ones, reading creates a very solid foundation in terms of thinking. Books expose young minds to different parts of the world and authors from diverse backgrounds and cultures. It teaches children to empathise, understand different situations, enriches vocabulary, enhances concentration. Words of wisdom learnt today makes informed leaders of tomorrow.” In the era of e-books and gadgets, does she feel readers’ interest in physical books is diminishing? Shirin reacts, “I personally endorse physical books.

It is an absolute personal choice. It is an investment in yourself. We celebrate the books. It is a gift that we can open again and again. Excess use of gadgets affects our eyesight and adds to our screen time. We should immerse ourselves and enjoy being lost in another world rather than getting distracted by notifications on screen.” Shedding light on the format of PAB, Shirin adds, “Weekly sessions are mostly held. We engage people through different ways to read and explore different topics. The members select a book, read it, research on it and then present a summary. As there is no language barrier one can pick any book, read it and express their views. This in turn, helps hone the member’s public-speaking and presentation skills as well as build effective communication. It is not just about reading a book but much more than that.” Shirin, a life coach counsellor and creativity coach, feels elders in the family should make efforts to make new friends in form of books. The children will follow. “We, humans, are multilayered. Reading helps us understand different aspects of life in a pleasurable manner. It helps us to be present in the moment and enjoy it. Do not try to just finish the book. But gradually explore new facets and enjoy the nuances. With every word we get immersed in it and the journey is magical. We only gain from books there is nothing to lose,” asserts the young girl. n
