CITY paddler Jennifer Varghese is on song. Continuing with her purple patch, she pocketed yet another WTT Youth Contender title winning Under-17 girls singles event of the Agadir 2022 edition under way in Morocco, on Sunday.
In the all-Indian summit clash, Jennifer, ranked 89th in the world in her age group, stunned a much better ranked at tenth Suhana Saini 3-1.
After racing to a 2-0 lead winning the first two games 11-4, 11-8, Jennifer lost the third game 8-11 but made amends quickly to take the fourth game at 11-5 and the title. In the semis, Jennifer had blanked compatriot Risha Mirchandani 3-0 (11-7, 11-7, 11-6).
In fact, she had to fight hard in the previous two games. In quarters, she was stretched by Hardee Patel 3-2 in the quarter-final and had the same score in her favour against Portugal’s Mariana Santa in the round of sixteen.
Jennifer had to be satisfied with a silver in the Under-15 category, though. She lost the all important final 1-3 (11-9, 9-11, 11-8, 11-5) to Maria Bersoza Casas of Spain. In the semis, she thumped Morocco’s local girl Dina Barrada 3-0 (11-3, 11-7, 11-5). A class IX student of Centre Point School, Katol Road, Jennifer is just 14 years of age.
