‘20 cases, one death in Nagpur distt due to Lumpy Skin Disease’

A total of 20 cattle got infected and one has died due to Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in Nagpur district in last one week, informed District Collector Dr Vipin Itankar in a press conference held at Collectorate on Thursday evening.
“LSD is a viral disease that affects cattle and is extremely contagious. It is like a COVID-19 outbreak in animals and while dealing with it, the place where the outbreak occurred should be sanitised,” said Dr Itankar.
So far, twenty animals have been infected in the district and one bull has died. The epicentre of the disease is Hingna and Saoner tehsils so far. In all, 11 cases are reported in Junewani village in Hingna and 9 cases in Saoner. Whereas, the death of a bull took place in Junewani village.
The district administration has a stock of 10,000 vaccine and so far 4,000 cattle have been vaccinated has already given to the cattle in the epicentre of the disease, said the Collector.
People should not panic of this disease because it is 100% curable and it is not infectious among humans by any way. The consumption of milk of such cattle is also safe for humans, said the Collector.
However, vaccination should be done as soon as symptoms appear. Therefore, Dr Itankar appealed citizens to inform the nearest animal husbandry centre or village panchayat if they notice any symptoms of LSD in their animals.
Yogesh Kumbhejkar, Chief Executive Officer, Zilla Parishad was also present during the conference. District administration has prepared 20 teams to execute vaccination among all animals in the district.
Deputy Commissioner of Animal Husbandry Dr Manjusha Pundalik, District Animal Husbandry Officer Dr Mohan Khandare were also present.
The Collector further said, vaccines have been made available in abundance through the State Government. It is an infectious and dangerous disease and therefore the Government as well as Animal Husbandry Department have started various measures in the district to prevent its spreading. The purchase and sale of cattle in the district has stopped and the movement of cattle from one place to another has also been completely restricted by the administration.
As per the Central Government’s directions, the bovine animals of the village coming within a radius of five kilometers should be given preventive vaccination.
It has also been clarified that in case of death of animals due to infestation, the entire responsibility of disposing of the carcass is of the Gram Panchayat and Municipal Corporation.
The administration is also keeping an eye on the stray animals and animals in the Gaushalas in the district and vaccination has been started in many places. Vaccination will be done in phases, said the Collector. The district administration has also started a toll-free number 1962 for citizens.
